Gout is a common yet complex condition that we often see in our outpatient department. It may appear straightforward, but managing it can be quite challenging. In this post, let’s explore what gout is, why uric acid levels increase, and how we can effectively manage the condition.
What Is Gout?
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. When uric acid levels in the body become elevated, these crystals tend to deposit in joints, leading to inflammation, swelling, and intense pain. This inflammation within the joint space is what characterizes gout.
We classify gout as a metabolic inflammatory arthritis. The term “metabolic” indicates that the condition is related to disruptions in the body’s chemical processes, similar to other metabolic disorders like diabetes or high cholesterol.
Why Does Uric Acid Increase?
Uric acid is a byproduct of the breakdown of purines—substances found in certain foods and also naturally produced by the body. Normally, uric acid is dissolved in the blood and excreted through the kidneys. However, when too much uric acid is produced or the kidneys fail to eliminate enough of it, levels in the bloodstream rise, increasing the risk of crystal formation and gout.
Who Is at Risk?
Gout can affect both men and women, but it is more commonly seen in men. Among women, it generally occurs after menopause, typically around the age of 50 or beyond. This is because the female hormone estrogen, which helps in uric acid excretion, declines after menopause.
Age is another risk factor—older adults are more prone to developing gout. Lifestyle choices, genetics, and certain medical conditions (like hypertension, kidney disease, and obesity) also play a role in increasing uric acid levels.
Gout is a manageable condition when diagnosed early and treated properly. If you’re experiencing joint pain or have a known history of high uric acid levels, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional. Effective lifestyle modifications and medical management can significantly improve your quality of life.
