A 55-year-old homemaker from Kayamkulam was admitted to Dr. KM Cherian Institute of Medical Sciences with sudden severe back pain and weakness in her legs. Detailed evaluation revealed excessive bleeding in the spinal cord. She was diagnosed with Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hematoma, a very rare condition. Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Sreenath P. R, who led the surgery, said that the immediate emergency procedure to remove the blood clot helped prevent further paralysis and saved the patient.
The surgery was supported by Dr. Naveen Pillai (Senior Consultant Anesthesia), Dr. Rashmi Mohanan Menon (Consultant Anesthesia) and Dr. Gifty Alexander (Jr. Consultant Anesthesia).
Hospital Managing Director Rev. Fr. Dr. Alexander Koodarathil stated that the hospital has an advanced Neurosurgical Centre equipped to treat brain hemorrhage, severe head injuries and other critical neurological conditions.
