The Comprehensive Breast Care Centre, established under the Department of Oncology at Dr. KM Cherian Institute of Medical Sciences, was inaugurated by renowned playback singer K. S. Chithra. Renowned cancer specialist Dr. M. V. Pillai delivered the keynote address.
Breast cancer care requires a multidisciplinary team of specialists. The Comprehensive Breast Care Centre aims to provide a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services under one roof, including radiological investigations, biopsies, surgery, plastic surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapy.
The centre will also offer physical therapy, nutritional support, lymphedema management, psychological counselling, support groups and survivorship care, said Rev. Fr. Dr. Alexander Koodarathil, Managing Director of the hospital.
The number of breast cancer cases continues to rise in Kerala, as it does worldwide. When detected and treated at an early stage, breast cancer can be successfully treated, with a high chance of complete recovery. However, a significant proportion of patients seek medical attention only after the disease has advanced. Lack of awareness about the disease and the available treatment options remains one of the major reasons for delays in seeking medical care.

Mathew, Medical Superintendent and Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon; Dr. Boaz Vincent, Consultant Radiation Oncologist; Dr. Nidhun V. Ashok, Consultant Oncologist and Dr. John Thomas, Consultant Surgical Oncologist, also addressed the gathering.
