For new parents, watching a baby experience discomfort due to gas, abdominal distension, or frequent spitting up can be stressful. Infants naturally swallow air while feeding—whether they are breastfed or formula-fed. When trapped in the stomach, this air causes discomfort, stomach pain, and fussiness.

Fortunately, proper and consistent burping is a simple, highly effective way to release trapped air and keep your infant happy and comfortable.

Why Burping is Essential for Infants

Think of trapped gas in a baby’s stomach like opening a bottle of carbonated soda. When air bubbles build up inside, pressure builds until the gas is allowed to escape. If the swallowed air isn’t released through burping, it passes into the lower digestive tract, causing abdominal distension, stomach cramps, and irritability.

Regular burping helps release these air bubbles early, preventing discomfort and reducing the likelihood of spitting up after feedings.

Effective Positions for Burping Your Baby

There are three common and effective positions you can try to help your baby release trapped gas:

1. Over the Shoulder

  • Hold your baby upright with their chest resting against your upper chest and shoulder.

  • Ensure their stomach is supported gently against your body.

  • Supporting their neck and back with one hand, gently pat or stroke their back from bottom to top with the other.

2. Sitting on Your Lap

  • Sit your baby on your lap facing sideways or away from you.

  • Support your baby’s chest and chin with one hand (being careful not to place pressure on the throat).

  • Lean the baby slightly forward and gently pat or stroke their back with your other hand.

3. Lying Across Your Lap

  • Lay your baby stomach-down across your knees perpendicular to your body.

  • Gently support your baby’s head, ensuring it remains higher than their chest.

  • Gently pat or stroke their back until air releases.

Key Best Practices for Managing Infant Gas

  • Burping Duration: While some babies release air quickly, others may take longer. If your baby is prone to frequent gas or fussiness, spend at least 10 minutes attempting to burp them after feedings.

  • Post-Feeding Position: When placing your baby down after feeding and burping, laying them gently on their side (under supervision) can help minimize spit-ups and promote better comfort.

  • Patience is Key: Every infant digests differently. Tailoring your burping technique and giving your baby sufficient time after each meal ensures effective gas relief.
