Dr. KM Cherian Institute of Medical Sciences has achieved a remarkable milestone in the field of medical treatment by successfully performing a highly complex kidney transplant surgery. The kidney was donated by the mother to her 30-year-old son from Idukki, who had been undergoing hemodialysis three times a week for the past year due to kidney failure.
The patient, who had previously worked abroad as a driver, weighed around 100 kilograms, and the donor kidney had two renal arteries — one of which was extremely short and narrow — making the vascular anastomosis highly challenging. This precision-demanding surgery was successfully completed by the vascular surgeon using advanced surgical instruments.
KMC Hospital Managing Director, Rev. Fr. Dr. Alexander Koodarathil said that the organ transplant surgery unit at KMC Hospital comprises around fifteen specialist doctors and is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology.
The surgery was led by Dr. Geevarghese K. Mathew, Medical Superintendent and Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon; Dr. John Peter and Dr. Abhineet K. P, Urologists; Dr. Murali Appukuttan, Nodal Officer of the Organ Transplant Department and Gastro Surgeon; Dr. Naveen Pillai, Senior Consultant in Anesthesiology; and Dr. Appu Jose, Transplant Nephrologist.
