A 79-year-old male patient with multiple comorbidities and a post-nephrectomy status was successfully treated for a large rectal laterally spreading tumour measuring 6.5 × 5 cm through an advanced endoscopic procedure. The patient underwent Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) and had an uneventful recovery with no post-operative complications.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Anup S Nair, Consultant Gastroenterologist, KMC Hospital. ESD is a minimally invasive technique used for removing precancerous and early-stage cancerous lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. It involves injecting a solution beneath the lesion to lift it, followed by precise removal using a special electrocautery knife passed through an endoscope. This enables complete removal of the growth in a single piece, allows accurate pathological assessment, reduces the risk of recurrence and avoids the need for major surgery.
Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection is a highly specialised procedure and is carried out only in a limited number of centres in Kerala as well as across India, underscoring the advanced expertise involved in this successful intervention.
