Embryo Transfer is the final and most anticipated step for couples undergoing In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This is the stage where the embryo, or fetus, is placed inside the uterus.
A very common question asked by patients is a concerned one: If I stand up after the embryo transfer, will the embryo fall out of the uterus?
Why the Embryo Won’t Fall Out
This fear is based on a misunderstanding of the uterine environment. The uterus is not an empty, open space like a room. Instead, the uterus is a potential space, meaning the walls are pressed together.
The uterine lining, called the endometrium, is described as being similar to the cream filling inside a cream bun—the two sides are close and sticky. Once the embryo is transferred into this space, it is highly unlikely to fall out. Placing a small object, like a raisin or a grape, inside this potential space would not result in it falling out easily.
Similarly, once the embryo is transferred, the risk of it being displaced or falling out of the uterus is extremely low.
Resuming Normal Activities
Because of the secure nature of the uterus, women who have undergone embryo transfer are generally advised and encouraged to resume their normal daily activities. This includes:
-
Performing household chores.
-
Cooking and preparing meals.
-
Walking and moving around naturally.
The focus should be on maintaining a normal, low-stress life, as the embryo is safe within the uterus.
